Reducing Indwelling Urinary Catheter Use

Indications for indwelling urinary catheter:

  • acute urinary retention or bladder outlet obstruction
  • accurate urinary output (strict I & O) in critically ill patients
  • perioperative use in selected surgical procedures 
  • open sacral or perineal wounds
  • prolonged immobilization (e.g.-trauma/burns)
  • comfort for end-of-life care
